We construct domestic driveways, but specialise in paved areas on commercial and light industrial sites. Although brick paving is usually selected for its decorative qualities and is not ideal for heavy traffic, it can be installed for moderate traffic areas on an appropriately prepared sub-base. In areas such as bends in the driveway or on turning corners, brick paving may experience excessive wear and become loose. It is possible to rehabilitate such paving.
Johannesburg is particularly known for its Highveld storms. These create deluges of water on virtually a daily basis throughout summer. This creates particular challenges for drainage. Permeable paving allows some rain water to drain through into the subsoil instead of forming puddles on the brick surface. Damage from excessive rainwater can be reduced by sub-surface drainage during construction, which should prevent paving from being undermined.
The installation of kerbs is not simply a neatening device. Paved paths, roadways and patios last longer when the sides are supported and appropriately finished off with kerbs. Kerbs divert surface rainwater into culverts instead of allowing water to seep under the roadway and weaken the sub-base. Diverting water away from the base reduces the risk of subsidence and damage to the paved surface.
